Candles and hoods

Without the spark plug, no engine would start. The principle of starting and operating petrol engines for cars, motorcycles and garden machinery is essentially the same. The purpose of the spark plug is to create an electrical impulse - a spark that ignites a mixture of fuel and air in the cylinders. The only difference is the size of the spark plug and the diameter of the thread, 14 mm diameter spark plugs are most commonly used in cars and 10-12 mm in lawn mowers. Spark plugs are usually located on the front or side of the engine, a single tool is sufficient to replace them, and no specific knowledge is required.

How to choose a candle for a lawn mower?

You will never make a mistake by choosing well-known manufacturers NGK, Biggs & Stratton, Bosch, Honda, Champion spark plugs for lawn mowers. Original spark plugs have a stable spark power, are made of high quality metal so they do not rust, reduce fuel consumption.

The copper electrode in the center of the mower's spark plug is extremely durable and long-lasting, the scratched ceramic surface at the top reduces voltage fluctuations, all ceramic insulation made of aluminum silicone ensures heat resistance and good heat permeability, double-layer or three-layer

Often people do not know what the spacing of the candle diode is or should be. If you have not saved the lawnmower spark plug packaging, you can find its technical characteristics on the manufacturer's website or in online stores that sell spare parts for lawnmowers. The spacing of the candle between the diodes is measured with a special tool similar to a large coin, its edge is of unequal thickness with divisions that show what the gap between the diodes is. The spacing between the diodes most commonly used in lawn mowers is 0,20 and 0,30.

To choose the right mower candle you need to know:

  • Candle diameter
  • The gap between the diodes
  • Candle height
  • Candle thread depth

When to change a candle?

Manufacturers recommend changing the spark plugs of garden equipment every 1-2 seasons, so if you want your mower to be hassle-free, easy to start and work efficiently and economically, change the spark plug every year before the start of the season.

How to replace the mower spark plug?

We are convinced that the candle for the mower can be replaced even by an inexperienced user. You don't need much knowledge here, the most important thing is to have a wrench of the right size, specially designed for unscrewing / screwing candles. For candle diagnostics, repair technicians use an unsophisticated candle inspection cord / tool that you can also purchase. The essence of this device is a clear glass or plastic chamber through the window of which you can see whether the candle is causing a spark when we pull the starter cord. After removing candle tip (the so-called “pipe”) turn the mower's candle counterclockwise. If you are not able to quickly buy a new candle, you can clean and temporarily use the old one. Black dirt that has accumulated on the electrodes must be removed. This is best done with a metal brush or fine-textured sandpaper, taking care not to damage the gap between the electrodes. With the newly screwed spark plug, the mower should start from the first three tests regardless of weather conditions and other factors.
